American swimmers take center stage during Day 5 of Rio games

RIO DE JANEIRO (WWBT) - Wednesday evening, eyes will turn to Olympic Aquatics Stadium in Rio for another night as Team USA works to continue its dominance in the water.

For the men, the 100m freestyle event will feature 2012 London Olympic Games gold medalist and American Nathan Adrian facing off against the world in the event.

The semifinals saw Adrian leading the field by a narrow margin of five-hundredths of a second over Australia's Kyle Chalmers.

On the women's side, the 4x200m freestyle relay will present another chance for the United States to medal in the pool as freestyle phenom Katie Ledecky and Missy Franklin lead the American team into the water, facing off against Japan, Hungary, China, Australia, Russia, Canada, and Sweden in the finals.

In addition, American superstars Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte seek to advance in the men's 200m individual medley semifinals.

On the sands of Rio's beaches, the top U.S. women's duos, Kerri Walsh-Jennings and April Ross face off against the Swiss duo of Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Vergé-Dépré.

For late night coverage, the pool returns as new diving teammates Michael Hixon and Sam Dorman of the United States are among the tandems to challenge China in the men's synchronized springboard final.
