Henrico boy who uses wheelchair 'trapped' in apartment after stairwell caves in

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - A Henrico family called 12 On Your Side after the stairwell leading up to their apartment started caving in.

The ordeal left a 6-year-old who uses a wheelchair to get around trapped in his apartment at Essex Village, but the maintenance department says it's not an emergency, according to the family.

Neighbors can't help worrying about their children. Six-year-old Diamond Simpson says she's afraid to walk down the stairs in fear of falling. She is even more concerned about her cousin Zi'Sean, who needs a wheelchair to get around.

The family usually straps him in tight and carries him down the stairs, but even that is now a challenge.

NBC12 stopped by the Essex Village rental office - no one answered, even though several cars were in the driveway.

NBC12 called and left messages and was there as maintenance crews arrived with ply wood and started posting signs, declaring "Caution! watch your step."

Henrico Police soon arrived on scene, watching as repairs were being made.

"I mean this is ridiculous," said Francine Carter. "It has been like that for almost two weeks, and it takes all of this to have somebody out?"

ZiSean's grandmother, who didn't want to show her face, says she is ultimately happy to see police on scene and crews responding with a sense of urgency.

Family says crews stayed late into the evening working to make those repairs.
