PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) -

Petersburg Mayor Howard Myers says he has removed a pile of trash that was near his home, which ended up leading to a citation being placed on a nearby piece of property.

According to the notice, the items must be removed within five days or the homeowner will face a penalty.

Neighbors had complained that the trash has been sitting outside of the mayor’s home for days and sent NBC12 photos of the mess.

When asked earlier Thursday afternoon, Myers explained that the trash was sitting on property next to his home, but he stressed that the trash, nor the property it was on, belong to him.

In addition, the mayor said he called a company to have the unsightly trash, which included old couches, removed Thursday morning.
