A trauma center, like the new Level II trauma center at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital, is a specialized hospital that treats patients suffering from life-threatening injuries including those occurring from falls, car collisions, and gun shots.
At Henrico Doctors’ Hospital, the new Level II trauma center is part of a system which encompasses the City of Richmond as well as the region. And as Dr. Ralph Layman, Chief of Surgery for Henrico Doctors’ Hospital, explains, the center serves as one of the key parts to a broader system.
“At a trauma center, all of the doctors are trained in advance trauma life support. We are surgeons by trade and we manage the patient from the time the patient comes into the door to the time they leave the hospital. As the trauma surgeon, we facilitate any other specialty surgeon that patient may need.”
It took about 18 months for the hospital to be able to provide this type of service to the area.
