CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - It's almost opening day for Wegmans but you may be wondering: why all the buzz surrounding a grocery store grand opening?
Some say it's the deals and prices, which NBC12's Jennifer Warnick put to the test.
From coupon policy to extra perks, there are plenty of ways to find the best deals while cruising the aisles of Chesterfield's newest grocery store.
The first thing to look out for is their family packs. Buying more lowers regular prices by up to 50 percent.
"We offer family packs throughout the store," explained Wegmans staff member Valerie Fox. "You'll find it in Wegmans brand, national brand, produce, meat, dairy, bakery items, frozen foods...Items that family purchase most."
The vacuum sealed packaging is intended to keep food fresh longer but also to makes them easy to split up. Even though prices are still being finalized, some of the family packs already meet or beat Warnick's stockpiling price points.
You'll also want to sign up for the Shopper's Club card and load it into the Wegmans smartphone app, available on the Apple App Store and Google Play store, to get extra perks.
"It offers aisle location so you can shop the store easily and find them and it also offers pricing," Fox said.
The app also calculates your total so you know exactly how much your groceries will cost. The digital coupon section of the Wegmans app is also being tested now. The plan is to expand it to the public this year.
The store also features an entire section of $6 wines!
Wegmans doesn't play the grocery game, with no weekly sales circulars and price don't fluctuate.
"We really don't have a lot of gimmicks, to be honest," remarked Jo Natale with Wegmans. "We think its better to just have low prices."
Manufacturer coupons are accepted at face value, but they can be stacked with Wegmans coupons, as long as they don't exceed the price of the product.
A mailer went out last week and more will be coming throughout the year. You'll find even more store coupons in their Menu Magazine, which gets mailed to cardholders ever quarter.
"We understand that we're new in this market," admitted Natale. "People don't know us. We need to give them a reason to come here and try Wegmans. We know once they do, they will love it and they'll be back every week."
