CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

A 12 On Your Side update and resolution - a tub-to-shower conversion is now complete, and we're happy to help bring you the great news for a Chesterfield woman who can now be safe and independent in her own home.

It's all thanks to the owner of a Richmond company who saw our original story and was motivated to help make the shower easier to use in Grethel Hershey's bathroom.

Steve Thompson, owner of Re-Bath of Richmond, saw our report and reached out to NBC12 to help the woman with crippling arthritis.

They did it all in 48 hours after assessing what was needed and getting the materials.

The demolition and tear down, restoration and new installation were all amazing and just what Grethel Hershey needed.

"We tore that out, reinforced the walls, took the plumbing out, put a new drain and faucet and valve system in there," said Thompson. "Put a new, nice low-threshold shower base that she can just step right over with ease."

To appreciate the new shower, you need to have seen how tough it was for Hershey every time she made her way to the shower.

It was Hershey's granddaughter who emailed 12 about her loved one's difficulty.

"It just makes me so happy," said Heather Sheffield. "I was heartbroken to find out that she was having so much trouble, that it was just once a week that she was getting in there. So it makes me happy for her."

Hershey is happy too and already sees the benefit.

"A hundred and ten percent difference, at least you can take a bath every day on your own. On my own," said Hershey.

Re-Bath of Richmond specializes in tub-to-shower conversions and has a reputation for giving back to a community that has kept them in business more than eight years. Helping this family is right in line with what they do.

II think it looks great," said Thompson. "I think they'll get a lot of use out of it for years and years."

Hershey gave Thompson a kiss on the cheek and adds, "I appreciate it so much. It was nice meeting you. It was a nice doing business with you."

Thanks again Re-Bath of Richmond. The owner would not disclose the cost of the job but says Hershey's being treated just like a paying customer. She can call anytime she needs them.
