Man charged with choking Uber driver on I-95

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A man is behind bars accused of attacking an Uber driver on Interstate 95 in Chesterfield over the weekend.

State police say Maxwell A. Sweeney, 22, was one of two passengers who hired an Uber in the Fan District Sunday afternoon. The driver picked the Mansfield, MA man and another passenger up in the 1900 block of West Main Street and was headed south on I-95 when they told him to drive back to Richmond for another fare, investigators said. Before the driver could make it to Richmond, police say Sweeney reached up from the back seat and began choking the driver around mile marker 56 around 6:05 p.m.

The driver was able to pull over and police say Sweeney ran off, while the other passenger stayed at the scene. The driver didn't need medical treatment, but they were signs of an assault police said.

State Police charged Sweeney with one count of strangling another causing wounding or injury and one count of vandalism to a vehicle.

Maxwell is being held at the Chesterfield Jail.
