I want to talk to you about something we don’t talk about enough, and that is autism.
Did you know that, according to the Center for Disease Control, Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the nation, affecting one in 88 children?
Autism is now the third most common childhood disorder, more common than Down’s syndrome and childhood diabetes combined. It occurs more frequently than childhood cancer, cystic fibrosis, and multiple sclerosis together.
The CDC and early childhood professionals agree the earlier children receive appropriate assessment and intervention, the more we can do to help them reach their full potential.
Autism, of course, can be with you at any age and at any stage, and I would like to highlight two organizations that are providing assistance.
The first is The Faison School for Autism, a nonprofit autism center dedicated to providing resources for children with autism and their families.
The other is the Autism Society Central Virginia a non-profit organization providing services, advocacy, and support to children, youth, and adults with autism.
