The head of Virginia's Republican Party, John Whitbeck, says Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland is a strong opponent of gun rights.
Whitbeck claimed Garland voted to uphold DC's controversial ban on handguns. But Politifact rates that statement as false.
One federal judge wanted to keep the ban, but it wasn't Garland.
"And you might think, given Whitbeck's statement, Obama's nominee, Garland, was the one dissenting vote. But that's not the case," said Richmond Times-Dispatch Reporter Sean Gorman.
In fact, Merrick Garland never even heard that famous gun case.
It went on to the Supreme Court and Justice Scalia wrote the decision that affirmed the individual's rights to bear arms for the first time.
