Petersburg police arrest mother after baby's body found in trash truck

PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - Petersburg Police have arrested the mother after her baby's body was found in the back of a trash truck.

Police were seen at a garbage truck in the area of North Boulevard and Berkeley Avenue around 10 a.m. Friday. The scene cleared about 1 p.m.

These neighbors are parents and say they're pretty shaken up. "It broke my heart. It shook me. I don't understand it," said Kelly Redmond.

One neighbor said she spoke to a garbage truck worker, who said they discovered a body during a routine stop on their route on North Boulevard.

Neighbors said police went door to door during the investigation. "The wanted to know who was living in the home and was anybody pregnant," Leon Whitted said. "I asked them, 'what is this in reference to?' and they said they found a dead baby."

Detectives were also seen searching a home on North Boulevard, but did not provide details on why they were there. "They were doing swabs,
everything like that, in the bathroom," said a man who lives in the home.  He said he was related to the teenager who gave birth to the baby. He did not want to be identified.  "We had no idea she was pregnant," he said.

He said it's unclear if the baby was stillborn or if the death was on purpose. "I have not seen her since yesterday last night," he said. "She gets up early in the morning to get to school so I don't get to see her. I was really disappointed  because a life is a life."

Earlier on Friday, police said detectives "located someone who may be the child's mother, but that has not been confirmed."

The mother was charged with concealing a body.
