Petersburg church focuses on community health in upcoming annual race

PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) -

A Petersburg church is setting up an event to help people enjoy getting outside while also getting healthier.

It is time to lace up those sneakers and hit the pavement for the second annual Joy Run/Walk in Petersburg, sponsored by Tabernacle Baptist Church and Optima Health.

"We're health conscious. This is a part of our healthcare ministry, and we're taking it to the community," said Rev. Dr. Robert Diggs, Sr., pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

The Joy Run/Walk is a combined 5K and 2K. It is not your traditional race.

"You can run, shout, skip, do whatever you like," said Donald Barrow of Optima Health. However, it is an effort to get people up and moving.

A health fair will also be part of the event, and it will include blood pressure, cholesterol, and dental screenings, and so much more.

"At the end of this event, we want folks to know that they can look better, live longer, and they do that by eating properly, and also exercising," said Rev. Diggs.

The  race kicks off Saturday, April 23 at 9 a.m., but you must register to participate, whether as an individual or a team.

Early registration ends April 20th.
