HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

A teacher who is helping inspire students to pursue college or a career is the winner of the Excellence in Education award for March.

Samuel Brown is a College and Career Advisor at the Academy at Virginia Randolph in Henrico. He was nominated by several people for the way he encourages students to reach their full potential by reminding them what they are capable of on a daily basis.

He was called a role model for students who have some of the most challenging backgrounds and academic situations.

NBC12 and Henrico Federal Credit Union recently presented him with the award. Mr. Brown said he just loves working with his students.

"I dedicate my life to education, particularly young people. They often times get forgotten," said Brown. "Sometimes they get forgotten. Sometimes they get cast to the side. Sometimes they are predetermined at an early age and so, to me, it's important to remind them that their future is in their hands."

Brown was nominated by students, teachers and members of the community.
