RVA Parenting: Creative ways to cool off in the summer heat

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - When hot weather hits, it's easy to feel smothered by the soaring temperatures. We have some great, affordable ideas to help your family cool off and enjoy the season. Luckily, you don't have to look far - we have many great options right here in RVA.

Carissa Garabedian with Richmond Macaroni Kid helped us with some wonderful tips. She says water is an obvious choice! Stony Point has a fun spray fountain, and it's completely free.

"Even the older kids can run through it and get wet and then enjoy themselves," Garabedian said.

Lewis Ginter has a small water area, treehouse, and gardens to play in. There is a cost for admission, but watch for deals. Garabedian also says to watch the arts and craft schedule.

For kids of all ages, you might consider Cobblestone. This is a public pool with slides and fun for all ages. The younger kids even have their own play area.

You can catch some shade - or sun - at Belle Isle.

"You can walk and it's stroller friendly because the trails are flat and it's completely shaded," Garabedian said. "And those that want to get some sun, you can sit on the rocks. Put your feet in the water."

If a water day isn't in the cards, consider creating your own breeze with mini golfing, go karting, or batting cages at Iron Bridge Sports Park, Putt Putt, or Swaders.

For inside activities, you might try museums. Here is a list of several in Richmond.

Or, if your kids really need to wiggle, try trampoline parks like Skyzone or Jumpology.

"Trampoline parks have been a really fun one for a lot of kids," Garabedian said. "And again, that's really broken down so your younger kids can either go in at certain times or in a certain area that is separated for them."

And bowling alleys like Uptown Alley can have great summer deals for the family, too.

"A lot of bowling alleys actually have days that you can bowl for free," Garabedian said. "Or, if you're going in a group they'll discount you."

Movie theaters are a great option for hot weather or rainy days. Some even offer dollar movies, like Regal.

Our expert from Richmond Macaroni Kid says if you're trying to save money, try this trick before you head out.

"It's always worth a phone call, and the Facebook blasts are all about the promotions, so if you're on Facebook, you should really check and see what the specials are," Garabedian said.

We also found this list of fun things to do at home with your kids - many are free.
