HANOVER, VA (WWBT) - The search is on for the crooks who beat a man, robbed him and shoved him in his own trunk.
The victim thought he was going to look at a car for sale in Hanover County. Turns out investigators say he fell victim to a Craigslist scam.
Investigators say the 22-year-old victim was trapped in his trunk, but he escaped after he found the emergency trunk release. Once he got out, he ran to a nearby neighbor's house to call police.
"I saw some lights in the woods, and then there was a knock on the door," recalls a neighborhood resident.
This Hanover resident, who asked not to be identified, got a visit from investigators late Thursday night after a robbery on Taliaferro Lane.
Investigators say the victim met a woman on a nearby road to look at a Lexus that had been featured on Craigslist. Once they arrived on Taliaferro, two men came out of the woods and attacked the man.
The sheriff's office says the victim was robbed of his wallet, keys and cell phone before being stuffed into the trunk of his own vehicle. The three suspects then took off.
The victim suffered non-life threatening injuries and managed to get out of the car and call 911.
But, investigators say there's more to this case. Early Friday morning, the suspect's vehicle was found deserted in Richmond, and authorities determined the Lexus had been stolen last week.
Now, authorities are warning people to think twice about how they conduct their online business.
"I do my business during the day, 'cause at dark no telling who's lurking around," said the Hanover resident.
At this point, there have been no arrests. Investigators are looking for a woman and two men in connection to the case.
If you have any information, you're asked to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
