RVA Parenting: Stomach flu vs. flu

RVA Parenting: Stomach flu vs. flu

Are stomach flu and the flu the same thing?

"Stomach flu and the flu are two totally different things," says Dr. Jeff Bennett, D.O. FAAP, of KidMed in Richmond. "Stomach flu is a G.I. bug with vomiting, diarrhea, while influenza is the true flu." Dr. Bennett describes the flu as more of an upper respiratory illness, with symptoms such as a runny nose, watery eyes, red eyes, cough, body ache, chills and it can sometimes also come with abdominal pain and vomiting, as he says, "some of it crosses over."

Dr. Bennett points out there has been a recent uptick in flu cases.
