RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - With the release of the 2016 NCAA men's basketball tournament bracket this is finally clarity on where local teams are headed this March.
VCU is the No. 10 seed in the West Region and will play No. 7 Oregon State Friday at 1:30 in Oklahoma City. Should the Rams advance they would likely see No. 2 Oklahoma in the round of 32. Shaka Smart and Texas is a No. 6 seed in the West. If VCU and Texas both win two games the teams would face each other in the Sweet 16.
Virginia is the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region. The Cavaliers open the NCAA tournament Thursday at approximately 3:00 against No. 16 Hampton in Raleigh, NC. Michigan State - who has ended UVA's season each of the last two years in the NCAA tournament - is the No. 2 seed in the Midwest Region.
Virginia Tech accepted an invitation to the NIT. The Hokies host Princeton Thursday at 8:00.
Richmond declined to pursue any postseason tournaments. The CIT and CBI were possibilities for the Spiders.
