RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Richmond police are investigating a shooting in the East End at the Ashley Oaks apartments off Jennie Scher Road.

The gunfire erupted around 4:23 a.m. Police found a man suffering from non-life threatening gunshot wounds. He was taken to the hospital for treatment. Investigators were seen searching a stairwell and taking pictures as several police officers responded to the scene.

Rosa Mason, a grandmother, says she and her two granddaughters huddled together in their bedroom after they heard gunshots right outside their window.

They ran out of their apartment, only to encounter more nearby gunfire.

"I was getting ready to go to work, and it sounded like a boom … Then, me and my grandkids ran around to the front, and it sounded like somebody was shooting around the front," said Mason.

No one in Mason's family was injured. The little girls say they saw a man holding his arm on a stretcher in an ambulance.

Richmond police remain on the scene and have not named a suspect.
