TAPPAHANNOCK, VA (WWBT) -

In his first stop of touring storm-ravaged areas, Gov. Terry McAuliffe says he believes at least eight tornadoes touched down in Virginia on Wednesday.

Two tornadoes have been confirmed by the National Weather Service -- one in Waverly and one in Tappahannock.

"It's a very sad situation," said McAuliffe on his stop in Appomattox where one person was killed and at least seven people were injured.

McAuliffe says he saw a path of destruction 12-15 miles long in Appomattox as he flew in from Richmond.

The governor is also making stops in Waverly, where three people died, and in Essex, where more than 20 people were injured, on Thursday afternoon.

McAuliffe declared a State of Emergency on Wednesday as the storms rolled through the Commonwealth.
