A Henrico teacher who goes above and beyond to help students with special needs is being honored for her work in and out of the classroom.
NBC12 and Henrico Federal Credit Union honored Rebekah Goemaat of Byrd Middle School with the Excellence in Education for February.
Goemaat was nominated by a parent who said she is "the best example of campus inclusion in a middle school environment that Henrico County has to offer." Goemaat works with students with special needs and helps ensure they are fully included in the classroom and in activities around campus. She was praised for making sure other teachers take the time to make sure the students are able to take part in activities like Gym Club and the Capitol Cafe, which provides early job skills.
"I always try to think about what they need and what their futures are going to be and the inclusion stuff, that's going to be their lives, their social lives, their work lives. So, everything we do I try to think ahead to what their lives are going to be like in the future and giving them the most opportunity possible."
Nominations for the award are accepted on a rolling basis and the honoree is named by a panel of judges.
