North Richmond congregation opens new community center

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A North Richmond congregation is expanding its community reach through a new community center.

New Generations International Ministries officially opened its outreach community center, located at 1515 Chamberlayne Avenue, in December.

Volunteers have begun to feed and clothe the homeless on a weekly basis.

However, renovations are already underway that will allow them to do much more, such as offering daycare and after school services, helping people get jobs, restoring their rights, and even registering to vote.
"We are living in a day and time where people have to understand their rights and their power to vote. As well, employment is so important in this day and time with there still being a lot of layoffs. With the economy seeming to do better, there are still a lot of opportunities for people to live a better quality of life and that starts with education. Then, it goes to employment, so we believe that with educating them on voting and also being able to position them for better quality jobs and employment, that we'll build a better community." said Apostle Michael Hathaway, pastor of New Generations International Ministries.

The community center's grand opening will be held this Saturday, Feb. 20. A formal banquet will start at the community center at 4 p.m.

Apostle Hathaway says a job fair with a restoration of rights and voter registration will be held at the center next month.
