A birth event in Richmond this weekend is getting a lot of attention. Hundreds have already signed up to attend an RVA Birth Community Celebration. Within hours, the event was full and there was a waiting list. The event will celebrate new birthing options at the hospital, and also bring together many participants in the birthing community.
“Not only are we bringing people in Richmond together, childbirth educators, midwives, physicians, specialists... But, we’re bringing in celebrities who know a lot about birth,” explained Amber Price with Henrico Doctors’ Hospital. Price is the Vice President of Women’s Services for the hospital and also a certified nurse midwife.
Price went on to announce that Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein will be joining the discussion, in addition to the President of the American College of Nurse.
“I think what we’ve done is make this an inclusive discussion,” said Price. “Often, things are kind of polar in the birth world. It’s either a physician or a midwife or a different venue. We’re just putting everybody together in the same space to talk about basically how we can meet the needs of every woman in our town. We’re all kind of curious about what the other side is doing. And so, I think that’s been the overwhelming reason for the big response.”
Event organizers say they plan on making the event an annual project because it filled up so quickly. They also hope to provide video from the event for those who were unable to get in.
