ALEXANDRIA, VA (WWBT) - Joseph Farrokh, the man arrested at Richmond International Airport on Jan. 15 and charged with providing material support to a terrorist organization, is due in federal court in Alexandria on Monday for a preliminary hearing.
His suspected accomplice, Mahmoud Elhassan, will also appear in court. Elhassan was arrested in Woodbridge after driving Elhassan to Richmond and dropping him off near the airport.
The Department of Justice says Farrokh tried to travel Syria to join ISIS while Elhassan helped him and ultimately drove him to Richmond International Airport for his flight.
Farrokh, a U.S. citizen originally from Pennsylvania, is charged with attempting to provide material support and resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization.
Elhassan, a legal permanent U.S. resident originally from Sudan, is charged with aiding and abetting Farrokh's attempt to provide material support and resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization.
Both men are from Woodbridge and are in jail right now in Alexandria.
