RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Feld Entertainment, the parent company of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey, has announced that all of the Asian elephants from their traveling circus will be moved to a permanent conservation in Florida in May 2016.
The touring elephants were originally scheduled to be moved to the Ringling Bros. Center for Elephant Conservation by 2018. They will join the rest currently at the center for a total of 42 elephants.
Protesters lined the streets around the Coliseum in Richmond last year, calling for the release of the elephants. The show chose not to battle a nationwide push for local laws that would make it harder for elephants to perform, like banning certain training tools and practices within city limits.
