RESTAURANT REPORT: Temperature problems and used gloves

(WWBT) -

Saving gloves for reuse and food temperatures were a problem for some local restaurants on their last health inspections in this edition of the Restaurant Report.

We begin at Hiro Sushi at 9958 Midlothian Turnpike in Chesterfield, which had 5 critical violations. Among them, the report says single use gloves were being saved for reuse.

The Health Department says single use gloves aren't supposed to be used again because they may already have bacteria on them from food that was touched previously.

The inspector also wrote that some kitchen utensils weren't clean. Some problems were fixed right away. When the inspector returned a week later, the report says the kitchen had been thoroughly cleaned and all violations were corrected, except for a sink pipe that still needed to be fixed.

Up next, AW Shucks Country Store and Grill at 6100 Pouncey Tract Road in Glen Allen had an uncharacteristic 5 critical violations on its last health inspection. The report says some chicken, beans, and mac 'n cheese weren't being kept hot enough in the front display, and some pasta and potato salad weren't staying cold enough in a prep unit. They usually do better on inspections, so we called them up.

Managing Partner Duncan Van Ness sent us the following statement:
"The staff and ownership of AW Shucks Country Stores and Grill take any code violation regardless of the nature, as extremely serious. Our staff takes pride in the condition and cleanliness of our kitchen and the quality of the food that is served from it. All Restaurant Management are Safe Serve Certified and EVERY effort is made to comply with any all health department standards.

"This report does not represent the AW Shucks Brand Standards. Any critical violations that were discovered during our 4th Quarter Inspection were immediately corrected and rectified within minutes of being identified. The follow up report from the County Health Department states this very clearly."

We gave the NBC12 Hall of Fame Award to Cook Out at 4802 West Broad Street in Richmond. They're known for fresh, fast and friendly service, and now for earning perfect scores on four health inspections over the last two years.
