Virginia Tech upsets UVA for first win in series since 2012

BLACKSBURG, VA (WWBT) - Zach LeDay scored 22 points and Virginia Tech held off a late Virginia run, as the Hokies upset the 4th-ranked Cavaliers, 70-68, at Cassell Coliseum on Monday night. It snaps a seven game losing streak in the series for Virginia Tech, its first win against its arch rival since 2012.

Seth Allen connected on a three pointer with 8:09 to play in the game to tied the game at 50, the beginning of a 20-6 Hokie run that would stretch the lead to 67-56 with 2:11 remaining. However, UVA looked as though it might put together another ferocious comeback, as a 10-1 run pulled the Cavaliers to within two point. Anthony Gill's first three-pointer of the season trimmed the Virginia Tech lead to 68-66.

After the teams exchanged free throws, Virginia got the ball back, trailing 70-68, and London Perrantes drove baseline for the final shot. He appeared to draw contact, but no foul was called, as the Hokies completed the upset.

Justin Bibbs added 16 points, while Seth Allen chipped in 13 points. Perrantes led UVA with 22 points, while Gill scored 17 points and Malcolm Brogdon added 15.

Virginia Tech upset a top-five ranked team for the first time since 2011. The loss snapped the Cavaliers' 11-game winning streak.
