Driver charged with attempted capital murder after pursuit ends in crash at Chesterfield school

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

A Chesterfield Police car was hit near Cosby High School at the end of a chase from Amelia County, sending the suspect and an officer to the hospital.

Police now say the suspect, 32-year-old Derrick Edmonds of Danville, Va., has been charged with felony eluding and attempted capital murder of a police officer.

Amelia deputies found the car heading eastbound on Route 360, near the Route 153 intersection around 6:38 a.m. Deputies followed the car and say the vehicle was swerving in and out from one lane into another. They tried to stop the car near the Chesterfield County line, but the car kept going into Chesterfield County at excessive speeds of over 100 mph.

According to Chesterfield Police, a pursuit on Hull Street Road from Amelia County crossed into Chesterfield around 6:55 a.m. A Chesterfield officer worked with Amelia County deputies and joined the pursuit. The suspect vehicle turned onto Fox Club Parkway and into the school parking lot. Police say they positioned vehicles to block the parking lot exit, and the suspect tried to leave by striking an officer's car.

Amelia deputies say the suspect's car did not have a rear bumper.

Police say the suspect and the officer whose vehicle was struck were taken to the hospital for evaluation.
