HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Henrico police are investigating a late-night, officer-involved shooting in Henrico's east end where two people were sent to the hospital, including an officer.
An officer noticed a suspicious car in the parking lot of the Exxon gas station at Nine Mile Road and Gordons Lane around 10:30 p.m., which was closed at the time. When the officer approached, the driver sped off, hitting the officer. That's when the officer shot, hitting a woman in the passenger's seat. Later, police found the driver abandoned his car up the hill from the gas station. He fled on foot and left the injured woman in the car.
Surveillance video from a nearby business shows Henrico police cruisers rushing to the scene of an officer involved shooting. It's just a few doors down from Colin Andrews' repair business on Nine Mile Road. "It's not good for the area because I got a business here," Andrews says.
Andrews say he wants officers to check out anything suspicious and even asks police to check on his business. "It's very important," says Andrews. "Because I even tell them in the night pass around and check the cars in the shop and stuff."
The officer and a woman were taken to the hospital. The officer was released, and police say the woman's injuries are considered non-life threatening. The woman is currently in stable condition.
Police say the officer was placed on administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing.
The driver took off running but found him a short time later, according to police. He is in custody.
Police are working with the Commonwealth's Attorney for possible charges.
