HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - A report of a possible armed, suspicious person near a Henrico elementary school was made up by a student, school officials said Tuesday afternoon.
Springfield Park Elementary School was put on lockdown just before lunchtime after a student reported seeing a suspicious-looking person with what appeared to be a gun in the woods on Tuesday.
Class continued uninterrupted while police checked the area. Their search wasn't able to uncover any evidence to support the report and school officials say the student later admitted there was no suspicious person.
However, that didn't stop concerned parent Paul Andre from coming to the school when he received the alerts. "Every other week, you're hearing of a shooting in a school or a shooting in a business or something. Yeah, you worry, even though this seems like one of the safest places around to be... some of the best schools, you just don't know."
School let out at regular time Tuesday afternoon without incident. There were no officers on hand.
Police continue to look into the incident. No word how or if that child will be disciplined.
Parents say in this day and age, you can't be too careful, and they were happy with the school's and police department's response.
