Virginia Black Friday shoppers lined up for guns

Black Friday gun shoppers set a record nationwide. On November 27, more than 185,000 background checks were processed in the U.S.

Virginia shoppers also set a record. State police tracked more than 4,636 criminal background checks on gun buyers this Black Friday, which is up 3 percent Black Friday last year.

Also, sales over the last five years have only grown. The Commonwealth saw a 10 percent spike between 2011 and 2015.

The Virginia Firearms Transaction Center fielded the following number of requests for background checks from licensed gun dealers across Virginia on Black Friday:

  • 2015: 4,636
  • 2014: 4,386
  • 2013: 3,902
  • 2012: 3,856
  • 2011: 2,623
