A Henrico elementary school teacher received the NBC12 Excellence in Education award for November for going beyond the call of duty to make sure his students are educated in and out of the classroom.
Brian Del Corso has taught at Lakeside Elementary School in Henrico for 11 years. He was nominated for taking the time to go to students homes and visit with their families before the school year, encouraging them in the classroom and creating a quiz show for students struggling in math.
He even holds cultural dinners with global foods.
"Mr. DelCorso comes to school each day wearing a long sleeve shirt and tie. He feels that his appearance shows the students that everything that happens at school has value," read one of the nomination forms. "He also has Mystery Readers (police officers, doctors, elected representatives and just ordinary citizens) who come in and read to the students about a specific topic."
Students say they enjoy the enriching experiences in and out of the classroom.
"Our goal is to help kids from Kindergarten all the way to the end of their life, so hopefully we're teaching things right now that they'll be able to use forever," said DelCorso.
