HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Flames enveloped a home in Henrico, as a veteran rushed towards the fire, Wednesday morning. The house transformed into a fireball, on Casey Meadow Place in Sandston.
Eight-year U.S. Air Force veteran Kelly Richardson was stunned at the fire burning across the street from his home.
"It spread very quickly. You could feel the heat from the house from where I was standing," said Richardson.
However, Richardson didn't do much standing. He immediately raced towards the front door of the burning house. "I ran over the hill, towards the bottom of this hill here, to make an attempt to go up the steps."
However, the flames were too intense. Richardson noticed there were no lights on, nor were any cars parked in the driveway- a hopeful sign that the home was empty. Richardson dialed 9-1-1, waiting for fire crews. Firefighters pulled up in less than five minutes. The fire was too out-of-control for crews to enter, so they aggressively shot water from the ground and ladder trucks. Thankfully, no one was inside. However, if that wasn't the case, neither firefighters, nor this veteran, would have been deterred from trying to save anyone trapped.
"I would have made every attempt to get them out, to get them to safety," said Richardson.
Richardson says the family living in the home was unfortunately just moving in this week.
Fire officials are still working to pinpoint a cause for this fire.
