'Mistake' leaks checking account info of some RVA renters

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Some Richmond renters just had their checking account information made public! Managers at the "Villas of Oakwood" are calling this all a mistake.

"I was just blown away," said Lashonda Becton. "I was like...let me just call 12 News On Your Side."

Becton says she was emailed multiple copies of rental checks belonging to residents at the Villas of Oakwood apartments.

"And I was like, 'oh my God!'" said Becton. "Did he mean to give me this?"

The email was sent Monday. On Tuesday afternoon, managers admitted they had not yet notified residents.

"Because I don't want to just go to the residents and say, 'hey, we made a mistake' and that's it," said property manager James Thompson. "We want to be able to go to them and say, 'We made a mistake. Here is what we are going to do.' Whatever we need to do to make it right...we are going to make sure that the residents do find out about it and are taken care of."

But how did it happen? Becton says she paid her reservation fee, but she decided to go with a different apartment. She claims managers refused to offer her a refund even though their policy clearly states reservations fees are refundable.

Becton says managers were attempting to send her the policy when they mistakenly sent the checking information.

"Anybody could have gotten their hands on this," said Becton. "Luckily I'm not that type of person to do anything with that type of information."
