Polls open, voters to decide control of state Senate

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Polls open across Virginia at 6 AM today. Voters will decide which party controls the state's Senate.

We're keeping a close eye on several races. The big one: the battle for the tenth district Senate seat between Republican Glen Sturtevant and Democrat Dan Gecker, which represents parts of Richmond, Chesterfield and Powhatan.

More than a million dollars in ads from groups like the NRA and 'Everytown for Gun Safety' are trying to influence this race.

There are also a slew of local races in the Richmond area voters will decide. Board of Supervisors seats in Henrico, Chesterfield and Hanover, and School board seats in Henrico and Chesterfield.

Right now, Republicans control the Senate 21 to 19.

All 140 seats in Virginia's General Assembly are up for grabs.

Polls open at 6 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. We will have full election coverage all day on nbc12.com, on our mobile app and throughout the evening on NBC12.
