(WWBT) -

Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer announced Sunday he will retire at the end of the 2015 season. Beamer informed Virginia Tech officials, his players and coaches Sunday.

Beamer took over in Blacksburg in 1987 and has led the Hokies to 22 consecutive bowl games.  He reportedly told his staff in a meeting Sunday morning about his intentions to retire.

Beamer is currently the active wins leader among FBS coaches with 234.  Virginia Tech beat Boston College Saturday to improve to 4-5 on the season.

Virginia Tech won seven conference championships and played in six BCS bowl games under Beamer.

It's been long-rumored that defensive coordinator Bud Foster is the "coach in waiting" at Virginia Tech. Beamer said as recently as this off-season that he hopes an "in-house" hire would succeed him as coach of the Hokies.

“I have always said that ‘I want what is best for Virginia Tech,’” Beamer said. “Because of my love and passion for this great university, this program and our tremendous fans, I have decided after 29 years that it’s time."
