CAROLINE, VA (WWBT) -

Virginia State Police have ruled the death of a driver following a crash on I-95 in Caroline County a homicide.

Police identified the driver as 43-year-old Vernon Huff.

Officers say Huff was found shot multiple times after crashing his car on Interstate 95 near the Route 207 exit, around 2:40 a.m. on October 30. Huff was transported by helicopter to VCU Medical Center. He later died from his wounds.

Police say the man was shot before the crash, but its unclear if the shots were fired in the vehicle, while he was driving or before he got on the interstate.

The man's remains have been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond for examination and autopsy. The cause of death was determined to be from gunshot wounds to the left arm.

State police are still in the process of retracing the driver’s movements leading up to the shooting and eventual crash.
