Psychiatric patient from Petersburg facility found in Chesterfield

PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - A patient missing from a Petersburg psychiatric facility has been found in Chesterfield and is on his way back to the hospital.  This is the second time this month he escaped from the facility.

Joseph Nothnagel, 27, escaped from Poplar Springs Hospital Monday night, according to Petersburg Police. They said he walked away from the hospital, while taking a break outside.

Nothnagel's sister says he walked out of the hospital with some visitors who were leaving around 7 p.m. on Monday. Police and hospital officials have not confirmed how he managed to escape.

"We are currently cooperating fully with the authorities," Poplar Springs Hospital CEO Joseph Trapani originally said in a statement. "Due to patient confidentiality and privacy laws we are precluded from discussing individual cases with others outside law enforcement and regulatory agencies."

Nothnagel also escaped from the hospital on Oct. 5 after being taken into custody for a mental health situation. His mother had requested a protective order against him fearing for her safety, relatives said. A judge denied the request, but ordered him to receive psychiatric care. Hours later the hospital called the family telling them he scaled over the top of the wall of the hospital grounds.

Chesterfield police found Nothnagel days later off Woolridge Road and took him into custody without incident.
