More Bang For Your Buck: Having a garden can save you money

(WWBT) - One of the perks of the seasons changing?  Garden centers are eager to get rid of remaining inventory before the first frost.  Nursery owners say you can plant many of them now and enjoy them next year.  He also says now is a great time to buy fall veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, kale, etc.

"Lettuce, one of the easiest things that you can plant," Scott Ricca said. "We can plant multiple types of lettuce.  [It's] so easy to grow.  Just for pennies for seeds and just a little bit of time, you can have beautiful lettuce all winter long into next spring and early summer."

The cost of planting a garden is, of course, much lower than a cart full of produce from the grocery store.  For example, it costs $2.99 to have green onions forever, if you choose.

"This is kind of [like] buy it one time and you could have it for years and year,s if you treat it properly," Ricca said

Same goes for herbs like oregeno and rosemary.  A single plant costs less than it does at the grocery store.

"You do not have to have a massive garden," Ricca said.  "You would be surprised what you can grow in a large container."

If you grew some this summer, plant it in the yard.  Plants, like rosemary, could last ten to fifteen years.
