Last week Richmond hosted the UCI World Cycling Championships and if you were anywhere near the course in the three jurisdictions of Richmond, Hanover or Henrico you will agree that it was a tremendous success.
Credit is due where credit is earned, and Mayor Dwight Jones and the regional leadership should be proud of executing a world class event for the Richmond Region and the international audience that viewed it on television. But most of all, the citizens of the RVA should be proud of making the international and US visitors feel welcome.
According to the UCI organizers, 645,000 people attended some part of the events over 10 days including the Opening Ceremony. In the interest of full disclosure, these are daily duplicated numbers which means some people may have been counted more than once. Nonetheless, the gross number is very impressive.
So here’s a quiz. Name the US city and region that showcased international cycling to the global community for 9 consecutive days for the first time in 30 years? The answer is: The RVA, and no one can say that, but you!
