RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

VCU told its students and community to resume normal activity after police were unable to confirm reports of a possible armed subject near campus.

Police received multiple calls starting around 9:50 a.m. of a man with what appeared to be a rifle on the 2nd Street overpass. Two people described the man as wearing a square military-style hat, green shirt, jacket and carrying a black backpack. He was last seen going east on Grace from Belvidere. Open carry is legal in Virginia, but investigators want to find the subject after receiving the calls.

The university sent out an alert Friday morning warning people to avoid the Monroe Park campus due to the possible armed subject. However, after VCU Police, Richmond Police and State Police searched for an hour they were unable to confirm the reports. Police are continuing to monitor the area, according to VCU, but say the community can resume normal activity and report any unusual activity to police.
