Cycling 101- The different races of the World Championships

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The World Championships hold their first race Sunday. 12 titles will be given out during the course of the nine day event, and those dozen honors will be spread across several different disciplines of racing.

The team time trial features six riders per team who will ride as fast as they can in a group. The clock will stop when the fourth cyclist crosses the finish line, so having one fast athlete won't help a team. The six riders have to travel as a group, and get that fourth bike across the line as quickly as possible.

The individual time trial is a cyclist riding by himself/herself around a loop as fast as possible. It's a test of speed, strength and mentality. With nobody to ride with or pace with, a cyclist will be challenged to complete the distance as fast as possible solo.

The road circuit races are the mass start events. 100-200 cyclists will start at the same time. This race is a test of endurance and strategy. The elite men will go around a ten mile loop 16 times, and the elite women will travel the same loop eleven times.
