Sunday 9/20 Richmond 2015 Guide

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Richmond 2015 cycling action continues for the UCI Road World Championships on Sunday with a pair of Team Time Trial events.

The Elite Women's Team Time Trial event begins at 11:30 a.m. at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens and continues until 12:55 p.m. The Men's will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 3:35 p.m.

Team Time Trial Course 

The Team Time Trial course travels south on Route 161, which changes names from Lakeside Avenue to Hermitage Avenue to Boulevard. Cyclists then turn onto Monument Avenue east through the Fan District, cuts north on Belvidere Street to Broad Street and continues east to 2nd Street. At that point, riders go south to Main Street and continue east past Rocketts Landing on Old Osborne Turnpike. The course then loops back south of Pocahontas Parkway to New Market Road and heads back toward downtown where they reach the finish line at 5th and Broad streets by the Greater Richmond Convention Center.

Team Time Trial course traffic 

The race will close several highway ramps:

  • The West Broad Street exit off Interstate 95 (Exit 74C) will be closed to both northbound and southbound traffic for the duration of the World Cycling Championships.
  • The Hermitage Road on-ramp (Entrance 80) to I-95 southbound will be closed on Saturday.
  • The Boulevard on-ramp to I-95 northbound and off-ramp to I-95 southbound (Exit 78) will be closed on Saturday.
  • The 895 Pocahontas Parkway exits for New Market Road Laburnum Ave will be closed on Saturday
  • The I-195 Downtown Expressway Belvidere Street exits will be closed on Saturday

Several roads will be closed along the course starting around 10:30 a.m. for the Team Time Trial course until 4:45 p.m. However, there are points where drivers can cross the course:

  • Oakwood Lane
  • Bellevue Avenue
  • W. Laburnum Avenue
  • Westwood Avenue
  • Broad Street and Boulevard
  • N. Robinson Street
  • N. Meadow Street
  • N. Harrison Street
  • N. 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 14th, 15th, 21st and 25th streets
  • Orleans Street
  • Goddin Street
  • Warwick Park Road
  • S. Laburnum Avenue at New Market Road
  • Messer Road
  • Midview Road
  • McCoul Street

Parking, shuttles and bus information

Parking is available for $10 per day and includes a free shuttle service. Payment can not be made in cash.

Each lot opens at 7:00 a.m. and remains open until 11 p.m. On Monday lots are available at City Stadium and the Diamond. The shuttle will take fans to the various lots and the venue at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.

GRTC also offers bus service and is selling a $35 unlimited ride pass for the World Cycling Championships.

Where to Watch

Coverage of the Women's Elite Team Time Trial will air on Universal Sports from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the Men's Elite Team Time Trial on CNBC from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

NBC12 will have live reports during 12News at 6 and 11, with the newscasts streaming on the NBC12 News app.

The best place to watch in person will be at the Fan Zone near the start line at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, which will feature a Jumbotron. The other prime option is the free FanZone near the finish line at 5th and Broad streets, which will also have a beer garden. Inside, check out the FanFest at the Greater Richmond Convention Center from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. It will also have a Jumbotron with live race coverage, a KidZone, vendors and the official award ceremonies.

You can also watch the action from Monument Avenue, Monroe Park, Governor Street, Main Street near Libby Hill, and Richmond Battlefield Park.


The weather is expected to be comfortable and clear for the races with temperatures in the 80s.
