Heavy rain in the Richmond area is causing traffic to back up for Thursday afternoon's rush hour. The Virginia Department of Transportation says at one point there were two different backups on Interstate 95 -- one northbound, the other southbound.
The northbound I-95 backup extended from the Boulevard (mile marker 78) in Richmond. It went back five miles at one point, but VDOT says it has now cleared up.
Meanwhile, the southbound I-95 backup extended from Chippenham Parkway (mile marker 67) in Chesterfield for six miles.
"Use caution when driving in heavy rain & storms. Wind can blow debris into the road & rain can reduce visibility," VDOT tweeted, also adding that drivers should slow down, use their wipers and turn on their headlights.
