RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A 6-year-old girl was hit by a car on Monday afternoon, and the driver took off.
Police have arrested 45-year-old Linwood Eddleton and charged him with a felony hit and run.
The Richmond Fire Department says the accident happened at the intersection of Littlepage St. and Coulter St. around 4:30 p.m. Police say the side mirror from a green Honda hit the child. She was taken to the hospital as a precaution, but she was only left with a few scrapes and bruises on her knee.
The Honda's driver took off from the scene, but was caught 30 minutes later by police on N. 20th St.
Neighbors say the girl was getting dessert from an ice cream truck parked along Coalter Street when it happened.
Tashima Pitchford, a mother who lives in the area, says she saw the whole thing.
"It was a loud boom, and she just shot straight back up," Pitchford said.
While police haven't said speed is a factor in this case, Pitchford says it is a problem in the neighborhood filled with children.
"Slow down coming down the block, because you never know what could happen," Pitchford said.
Mia Mitchell, also a mother with family in the neighborhood, says this serves as an important reminder about the great responsibility parents have for their children's safety.
"You have to keep your eye on your kids no matter how comfortable you are, even in front of your home," said Mitchell.
