RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Virginia's Department of Motor Vehicles will begin the administrative process of recalling and replacing license plates that bear the image of the Confederate flag.
Last week, federal Judge Jackson Kiser ruled Virginia could remove the Confederate Battle Flag from license plates, dissolving a 2001 injunction that allowed it to appear on specialty plates. That injunction had allowed the Sons of Confederate Veterans to place the confederate battle flag on certain specialty license plates in Virginia.
The ruling did not go into effect until Wednesday, when Judge Kiser officially entered his his order. It not only means new plates featuring the flag will no longer be issued, but existing plates must also be recalled and replaced.
