DAY AHEAD: Service for 8-year-old Pamunkey River drowning victim

WEST POINT, VA (WWBT) - There will be a prayer service Tuesday for the 8-year-old boy who drowned in the Pamunkey River.

Family members say Joel Martinez Mercado apparently fell off a pier and into the water, near the Route 33 bridge on Sunday night. He was a rising third grader at New Kent Elementary School.

The service will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Vincent Funeral Home, 417 11th Street, West Point, VA.

The funeral service is Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 3570 King William Avenue, West Point, VA.
