Sex offender charged in 1970s VA murder mystery

BEDFORD, VA (WWBT) - A sex offender with ties to Virginia now faces first-degree murder charges in the death of two sisters who went missing in the 1970s.

Police say Lloyd Welch abducted Katharine and Sheila Lyon in March 1975 from a suburban Maryland mall and murdered them in Virginia. Katharine was 12 years old and Sheila was ten at the time.

Authorities announced the indictment against Welch at a press conference in Wheaton, Maryland on Wednesday morning.

Welch is an inmate in a state prison in Delaware and a registered sex offender. The sisters were abducted in Montgomery County, Maryland and murdered in Bedford County, Virginia, according to authorities.

Investigators scoured Taylor Mountain in the Thaxton community of Bedford County for days, since September 2014. Residents say police have been focusing their search at a cemetery on the top of a hill.

The FBI has been calling Welch a person of interest in the case for some time. He reportedly spent time in this quiet secluded community of Taylor Mountain growing up.
