RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Veteran NBC12 reporter Ed McLaughlin has passed away after a battle with cancer at the age of 78.
Ed worked as a reporter at NBC12 for 31 years. Long-time viewers will remember Ed's resonating voice and solid presence. Ed had that rare gift of being an amazing reporter, but more than that, a master storyteller-- an artist with words and pictures. When Ed began at the station in 1969, there were no computers and even when there were, he always kept a dictionary and thesaurus at his desk. He was a stickler for the written and spoken word, and had a great respect for their power, setting a bar for the newsroom.
Ed was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word. Outside work, he took great pride in his garden, which he continued to work on after leaving television in 2000. He enjoyed being with his family and traveled a great deal upon retiring.
Ed's wife, Kay, says his cancer returned in January. Ed asked that there be no funeral service. If anyone wants to make a donation in his honor he requested it go to Virginia State University where he attended college.
