Henrico Police say a dog who had come in contact with a dead raccoon will be quarantined at home, after the raccoon's remains tested positive for rabies.
On Wednesday, Henrico Animal Protection Police received a call for service for a possible rabies exposure in the 6400 Block of Scandia Lake Place. When officers arrived, their investigation revealed a dog owner had discovered the remains of a dead raccoon in the yard with their dog.
The raccoon's remains were sent to the Virginia Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services for rabies testing, and positive results came back July 2.
Henrico Police said no other animals or humans came into contact with the raccoon. The dog involved will receive a booster shot and will be quarantined at the owner's home.
Police said this is the seventh confirmed positive rabies case in Henrico County for 2015.
