Police arrest suspect in deadly Richmond hit-and-run

A suspect in a deadly hit-and-run in South Richmond surrendered to police on Friday, according to detectives.

Ronald D. Jeffers, now faces felony charges of hit and run and driving on a suspended operator's license in connection with the crash which killed 74-year-old  Della Fields on Wednesday night.

"We appreciate the community's help in this case," said Lt. Thomas Nolan with the Traffic Unit. "As a result of its assistance and the information provided, this individual turned himself in to law enforcement."

Jeffers was behind the wheel of of car headed north on Newell Road around 8 p.m. when it struck the side of Field's SUV headed east on Jahnke Road near Jahnke Road Baptist Church, police said. Detectives say Jeffers continued driving north on Newell Road without stopping. Fields' SUV hit another car, then flipped and hit a parked, unoccupied car.

Fields died at the scene. At least four others were injured, but expected to recover.

Detectives ask anyone with any information to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
