Trooper directing traffic injured in tractor-trailer crash

CAROLINE, VA (WWBT) - A state trooper is recovering from serious injuries after being hit in an accident triggered by an out-of-control tractor trailer.

It happened on I-95, just north of Ladysmith in Caroline County.
Police say the tractor-trailer lost control while police were directing traffic due to high water on the roadway. The tractor trailer hit both a police car and a pickup truck. The pickup careened into the trooper directing traffic.

The trooper was sent flying over a guardrail onto the grass median in the middle of the highway. The tractor trailer then careened straight through the guardrail.

The trooper is at VCU Medical Center and is expected to pull through.

The tractor-trailer driver, 67-year-old Nicholas J. Coia of Florida, is now facing reckless driving charges.

All lanes are back open in the area.
